Renewables for Refugee Settlements.
Identifying sustainable energy access solutions in refugee settlements.
– In response to the alarming numbers of displaced people around the world and their unreliable access to sustainable energy and basic telecommunications access, NWNS is collaborating with GEEKS Without Frontiers in developing renewable power solutions for refugee settlements in addition to remote local communities.
Geeks Without Frontiers (Geekswf.org) is a platform for global impact. An award-winning non-profit, Geeks’ mission is to bring the benefits of broadband connectivity -health, education, poverty reduction, gender equality and the other UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s)- to the estimated 3.5 billion people who remain unconnected.
Geeks and NWNS aspire to empower the unserved, including the forcibly displaced, create Smart Communities and help catalyse positive global change. It does this by leveraging the benefits of satellite, wireless and fibre connectivity-based solutions in a resilient, technologically neutral and sustainable manner.
But all we do – and all we trying to accomplish – requires stable electrical power which is either not reliable or simply not available, especially there where power continuity can be mission critical. In general the best available are heavily polluting, high maintenance under serviced diesel generators.
At GWF and NWNS we are building insights and takeaways from studies and experience in order to outline avenues to replicate potential managed, reliable and affordable renewable energy solutions in refugee settlements. We are eager to share possible business models to increase the uptake of renewables (and therefore the economics of scale), as well as to enable the participation of more private actors including trained local field support.
We are pleased to invite you to join GWF and NWNS to discuss how renewable energy solutions could provide the refugees with clean, reliable, and cost-efficient energy for their daily needs.
